Aresnal picked up their first win of the season today, beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield. Here are some quick thoughts on the game.
Three games played and Arsenal are still to concede a goal. What makes that stat even more impressive is that Arsenal have went to Stoke and Liverpool with their third string goalkeeper. Steve Bould has done a terrific job making Arsenal with the Arsenal back-four, as well as the teams defending at corners and free kicks.
Arsenal seem a little more pragmatic this season. In the past, I have felt at times that Arsenal have tried to entertain first and win second. This year they seem to be about winning first, and that if the performance isn’t beautiful to watch, but it results in three points, so be it.
Great to see Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla get their first goals for the club. Podolski’s goal in particular was a prefect counter-attack and he must have run 60 yards to score after intercepting Gerrard’s pass in the Arsenal half.
Abou Diaby was simply brilliant today. Totally dominated the game. As someone said on Twitter, he looked like a young Patrick Viera. High praise indeed. Another player who I thought played really well was Carl Jenkinson. Other than his one pass that almost resulted in a Liverpool goal, he defended well and it was nice to see him even get into the attack every now and then.
The other summer signing yet to score is Olivier Giroud. Giroud missed the one good chance he had, from a corner, but I thought he played well. He dragged the Liverpool defenders all over the place and that created space and opportunities for Podolski and Cazorla. The goals will come for Giroud.
So off to the international break with five points from three games. The team gets better every week as the players get used to playing with each other and that is a good sign.
